Two Links – A Hypothetical, And A Library Idea

I’m generally not one to throw any support behind Nine’s Sunday, but I caught the end of a Geoffrey Robertson Hypothetical this morning, the transcript is available here.

This is one of a couple of stories about a program that is being employed in Europe; the idea is that you borrow a ‘sterotype’ for about forty-five minutes in the interests of engaging with individuals of differing perspectives. I am putting it forward as a possible project for the Club next year …

Borrowing a stereotype. I love it! For those who haven't read it, you would borrow a person, not just a stereotype. Where would we find these people Martin?

As I recall the details, from one of the articles, the 'borrowees' were from a range of local organisations; the muslim was from the local mosque, while the lesbian was from a local support organisation, and so on. So, it would making contact with the different organisations on campus - such as the international students, and the Queer collective - and asking for their support in the form of volunteers. You may have to make some arrangements with a Library to host the undertaking but it all seems straight-forward, organisationally.

I'm not sure that the uni library woiuld go for it sadly, but you never know. I do think that there is more chance of convincing the city council libraies to impliment a program similar to this

Well, you've plenty of time to start sounding the various key players out. Though, given that the project can be modified and adapted, you may not need to actually use a library ...

True. But I do think that this is the kind of thing NCC might go for.

Then you'll need to get in touch with them to see what they would require from you at their end to make it happen, and then make contact with the overseas libraries and with the groups on this end.

My suggestion is: find out what they need, get in touch with the overseas libraries and then set up a team in the Club to do the organisaton.
