Foucault: the Shirt

I will be making a short run of Foucault shirts as pictured.

This is a two colour image printed on a dark brown shirt, which will hopefully be raglan sleeved. The image is about 30cm in height.

If you would like a Foucault shirt, then let me know before next Monday. Tell me what size you are after and whether you want men's/lady's.

Also, I have been considering adding text either underneath the image or on the back. If you have any suggestions for a quote or the like, please let me know.

I'd like one of those shirts, and I'm a man, XL size

for the quote:

"It is not enough to repeat the empty affirmation that author has disappeared. for the same reason it is not enough to keep repeating that God and man have died a common death. Instead, we must locate the space left empty by the author's disappearance, follow the distribution of gaps and breaches, and wait for the openings this disappearance uncovers."

from "what is an author?"

and was that you on tv last night protesting about the coal?

Samuel you are wrong - the quote, if there has to be a quote needs to be either the one about the end of humanity or something about discipline!

Rowan, I really, really want one of those shirts. Male (in case you had forgotten), size L.

I'm not sure what quote I'd pick.

Well I don't know about what quote to use, if any. It will go on the back if there is one. If you know anyone who might want one, ask them, as I will be printing at least 8-10 no matter what, and I don't need 8-10 of the same shirt.

in 2-3 weeks time I will be printing a philosophers mug range. So far I am thinking it will be Foucault, Nietzsche, Marx, Wittgenstein, Berty and maybe Schopenhauer. Any suggestions on this would be appreciated.

my friend would like a shirt too.

she is a lady and medium.

The medium female above says she doesn't want a shirt anymore, because they are too expensive. Which makes me wonder: how much will they cost?

Pah, the avoidance of expense is the product of disciplinary practice. But so is the pursuit of expensive things, so 'huzzah' for a distinct lack of progress on my part.

On a more serious note, I'd purchase a Wittgenstein mug and/or a Schopenhauer mug.

I've thought more about the Foucault quote:

"I'm very proud that some people think that I'm a danger for the intellectual health of students. When people start thinking of health in intellectual activities, I think there is something wrong. In their opinion I am a dangerous man, since I am a crypto-Marxist, an irrationalist, a nihilist."
Truth, Power, Self: An Interview with Michel Foucault - October 25th, 1982.

Or possibly:

'...if you are not like everybody else, then you are abnormal, if you are abnormal , then you are sick. These three categories, not being like everybody else, not being normal and being sick are in fact very different but have been reduced to the same thing'

Maybe it's time for some Baudrillard shirts - are they going to be too ironic?

I’m in Newcastle on Wednesday the 4th and Thursday the 5th, and I haven’t washed the screens out yet, so you have until next Monday.

If I see Sam Douglas, I could give them to him to distribute.

I won’t charge unless there is a dramatic surge in demand, and then I’ll have to charge cost which is about $8. But honestly, I would have to do 10 shirts anyway for the exercise, so they are free as I don’t need this many Foucault shirts, just don’t abuse it and want 10.

The first run of 6 is pretty good, but I didn’t get through the 11 shirts, which are all chocolate brown and not raglan sleeved as I had to go with what was available sadly. I have decided that one of the colours is little too dark, so there will kind of be two to chose from.

Also there will be no text as they don’t really need them. The people who count to be seen around with wearing a Foucault shirt are the kind of people who don’t need to be told that it is Foucault. They’ll either know that or they won’t. It would also mean another screen, and all of Foucault’s quotables are too long to go on a shirt effectively, without becoming some sort of walking book, which I don’t believe is very cool at all.

Now the mug range will need to be more kewl than cool, so they can have all the quote they want on them, therefore I will need a:

Foucault
Nietzsche
Kant
Hegel
Wittgenstein
Russel

NO MARX! That’s because I already own one with him on it and the 14th these. I don’t really need another.

Also, I might look into the Baudrillard shirts: I believe he should live on as an image detached from anything other than just plain good taste. He would have wanted it, I think.

Regarding the Baudrillard shirt.

I think that it should probably have a picture of Derrida (I would have said Foucault, but you've already done one run) and the text 'I am the simulacrum of myself'.

I've taken delivery of some of these shirts. Be un-shirted at your peril.
